According to industry research company IBISWorld, the importance of social media is driving the demand for public relations firms, which are forecast to grow at an average annualized rate of 5.7% to $12.8 billion between 2010 and 2015.

Due to marketing budgets decreasing during the recession, trends fueling growth have included shifting away from traditional media to the use of web based social media and viral marketing campaigns. More public relations firms are launching or outsourcing divisions devoted to social media interaction in order to gain footing in the current economic climate.
